AUGUST 11, 2024 – EXCEEDING GREATNESS

READING: Eph. 1:19-23: and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Paul shows the congregation that all the abundant riches of grace he mentioned are also for them. He now speaks of the surpassing greatness of God’s power. Nothing is impossible for Him, and nothing can stand against Him! And God uses this overwhelming power for us who believe!

Paul points to an event where God’s surpassing power was made visible: the resurrection of Christ from the dead! Almost anyone can cause death, but no one can raise the dead.

Moreover, the resurrection of Christ means that He, as a human, received immortality from God, even heavenly glory and power. God has seated Him at His right hand and crowned Him with all honor and power (Matt. 28:18).

Everything is now subjected to Christ by God (Col. 2:9-10). Nothing and no one on earth are exempt from this, regardless of authority, power, and strength. This includes everything and everyone in the spiritual world, such as the devil and his angels. His power extends over all times and places.

The great comfort for us as the church is that Christ, with this power to which everything is subjected and remains subjected, has been appointed by God as our Head (Col. 1:18). He exercises His glorious power and strength in His church, which is His body. Let us find refuge in Him in all things!

Why is it good to know that God is so powerful?
