READ: Is. 32:1-20: Behold, a king will reign in righteousness … Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field … The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation …
Along with chapters 9 and 11, this passage also speaks of the Messianic kingdom of peace. It begins with a shout of joy: “Behold!” After judgment comes the reign of the new King. His reign will be entirely governed by righteousness, so very different from the reigns of earthly kings where corruption and injustice occur.
Who is this king whose reign contrasts with the godlessness of Assyria, but also with Judean kings who distort justice? Although Hezekiah was a God-fearing king, even he was not perfectly righteous.
Here, it is about the kingdom of Christ, which Isaiah had already foretold. His reign brings safety and security (v.2). Hardness of heart will also be removed (v.3); there will be understanding and wisdom among the people.
Things will be different for this nation. People will finally be judged for what they truly are. The fool will be called a fool. But much will also change beyond that. There will be an end to all worldly wealth with its carelessness, shamelessness, and debauchery (vv. 9-14). This is depicted by mourning over the loss of the easy life.
But when will this transformation of the Kingdom come? Verse 15 and following make this clear: with Pentecost! When the Spirit of Christ is poured out on the church, and Christ, through His Spirit, begins to dwell and work in hearts, causing people to be born again!
Through the Spirit, there is peace as the fruit of righteousness (Rom. 8; Col. 3; Gal. 5:22f; Eph. 4 and 5). In vivid language, the renewing work of the Spirit is described: fertility, justice, and righteousness, rest, and security.
What do we experience of that righteousness and peace?
