JULY 12, 2023 – WORK WITH THE GOSPEL!

READ: Mark. 4:21-25

With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. – Mark. 4: 24)

In the parable of the lamp, Jesus continues to develop the previous parable. The seed of the Sower produces fruits of faith when it falls on fertile ground. Jesus explained to His disciples that His glorious gospel is only for those who hear it and accept it. For the disciples, this results in a further command: they must spread the Word as His apostles.

Jesus now uses the image of the lamp to make this clear. This has a special meaning: the light is the Gospel of redemption and life because Jesus Himself is the Light of the world. The life-giving Word must be spread everywhere, to the far corners of the earth and deep into people’s hearts. In addition to the apostles, all believers have the task of witnessing to the gospel in their surroundings; they too, as followers of Jesus, are the light of the world (Matt. 4:14-16). When that light shines, you cannot darken it for yourself; that is rejecting the gospel.

Everything will be revealed at the time of Christ’s return. The light therefore demands a choice today: for or against Christ. Therefore, in verse 23, Jesus urges people to listen to the gospel and accept it! The same call is given as the conclusion of the seven letters to the churches in Revelation 2 and 3: “He who has ears, let him hear.” It applies also for us as members of the church: everyone must listen attentively.

The Lord Jesus emphasizes this in verse 24: “Consider carefully what you hear!” And then apply the Word well. Measure with a good measure: do not take anything away from the Word, but follow it completely. Then you will understand it better and better. But if you take away from it, you will understand it less and less; what you still have will be taken away from you. Whoever values it and acts on it will be given more.

Why is reading the Bible not optional?
