JULY 30, 2023 – KEEP FOLLOWING JESUS!

READ: Mark 10:28-31

“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” – Mark 10:31

Peter has been following Jesus’ conversation with the young man. He concludes that he and the other disciples have indeed given up everything to follow the Lord Jesus. Can they deduce from this that a place in the Kingdom is guaranteed for them? How can they be certain of this when only God, not humans, can ensure it?

Jesus gives him a partially reassuring answer. He emphatically declares that all followers of Him who give up everything for Him and the Gospel will receive rich promises. Not only the twelve disciples, but all true followers will enjoy good things on this earth: brothers and sisters in the new community of the church, who will also share their homes and fields with those in need. The richest reward is that they will receive eternal life in the world to come. There will be persecutions on earth, but the hope of that eternal life in glory is certain for them. It is a comforting word from the Lord.

But now Jesus adds a caveat. Many who are first will be last. As soon as you see eternal life as earned wages, you become proud and may fall behind in following the Lord. Self-satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment after church struggles can be a pitfall in following and serving Him. There is never a moment where you can cease the struggle of faith, thinking you have fought enough or wanting to focus on yourself.

Following the Lord always goes hand in hand with bearing the cross, self-denial, and humility throughout your life. Then the rich promises that Jesus mentions here apply.

Do you feel addressed when it comes to sacrifices?
