READ: Gen. 1:1-5.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. – Gen.1:1
The Bible begins with the very beginning of history. God is about to start something completely new. He, Elohim, the great exalted and eternal God, not only creates the beginning of time but also creates heaven and earth out of nothing.
Then He tells us how He further shapes His creation. This is not just a “story,” let alone a “myth” or a “saga.” No, it is a factual description, down to the day, of a surpassing divine work in human words.
These first words of the Bible already aim to astonish us and glorify God! The angels demonstrated this at that time (see Job 38:7). Especially for humanity, this is the main purpose of Creation. The church in heaven leads the way in worship when they say in Rev. 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will, they exist and were created.” Everything in Creation comes from God, the source of all that is good, and everything is for His glory (Rom. 11:36).
Yet it proves difficult for humans to accept this, due to their adherence to the God-dishonoring and unproven “theory of evolution.” Many Christians would rather be acknowledged and taken seriously by the godless world than honor God for His work, as He has described it. But God’s wrath comes upon such behavior (Rom. 1:18-21).
Heb. 11:3 says: “By faith, we understand that the world was created by the word of God, so that the things that are seen were not made out of things that are visible.” Our comfort and joy lie in the fact that God is all-powerful: He speaks, and it is done! God demonstrates His divine creative power in redemption as well (Ps. 51:12, Eph. 1:19,20), and in His creation of the new heaven and the new earth (Is. 65:17)!
