READ: Is. 4:2-6
In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious; and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing for those of Israel who have escaped. – Is. 4:2
The Day of the LORD brings both judgment (3:18, 4:1) and redemption (4:2). After the judgments upon Israel, the Messianic era arrives. The judgments serve to purify the people, not to completely destroy them.
The Branch of the LORD is the Messiah, the Christ (see also Jer. 23:5, 33:15, Zech. 3:8). He comes as a Branch, a Shoot from the family tree of David that was “cut down” during the exile. The LORD causes Him to sprout forth from it. He will be a truly glorious adornment, unlike the superficial adornment of the women (3:18ff).
He, the Christ, is the glory and beauty of Israel, bringing blessings and abundance to those who have escaped God’s judgment. This is depicted in earthly terms as enjoying the fruit of the land as their pride and glory.
This glorious future is only intended for the remnant that has separated itself from sin and is devoted to the LORD. Only the holy people belonging to God are to inhabit the new Zion. God works their holiness through His Spirit, both through judgment and through repentance and reconciliation. In this way, He saves all those whose names are written in the book of life (v.3, Acts 13:48, Revelation 20:12). Eternal life is destined for these chosen ones. God’s Spirit cleanses their inner beings from the filth of pride and the bloodguilt of injustice.
Thus, God will once again dwell among His people in Zion, especially in their gatherings. Even the Holy of Holies will no longer be separated: God dwells through Christ’s reconciliation amidst His people. This is indicated through Old Testament imagery of clouds, smoke, and fire, as God can create it with His creative power (v.5). God shows His church, in Christ, His presence and blessing, as well as His protection against the enemy.
A rich message for Israel then and for us now!
