READ: Heb. 10: 19-25
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Heb. 4:16
In our time, meditating has become popular. In this practice, one focuses their full attention on their own inner self, feelings and experiences. In this way one seeks meaning and a positive sense of self. But praying to God is not just for our satisfaction, to feel good about ourselves. It is also not focused on matters of this earth. No, in our prayers we approach the throne of the holy and supreme God in heaven, His throne of grace. Praying to God is a matter of faith; in that faith, through the Holy Spirit, we draw near God in heaven.
For a sinful man by himself, it is impossible to come to God, both physically and spiritually. God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). God is holy and does not tolerate any sin. Of ourselves we can have no boldness whatsoever to draw near to God because of our sins. But that has changed due to the atoning work of Christ, our great High Priest. His atoning blood, which He has shed on the cross, cleanses us from all our sins. On that sacrifice He still pleads for us as High Priest in heaven. It is only thanks to His intercession that we may now draw near to God. We then enter the heavenly sanctuary through the veil of His flesh (Heb. 10:20).
Boldness does not only mean that you dare to say what you have to say, but also that you have the right to do so. That right has been granted to us through Jesus Christ. It is an extremely precious thing that we are allowed to pray to God! But that right is not automatic, it requires a true heart and full assurance of faith (see verse 35).
Does boldness fit with humility?
