READ: Eph. 4:17-25

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. – 1 Pet. 2:1-3

Those who are born again have come to know Christ (Eph. 4:20). They live differently by faith in God’s Word. That is why they put off or abandon what is not fitting with Christ. They want to take off the garment of sin.

In verse 1, Peter speaks of all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. This goes against the fervent love that is mentioned in verse 22. They want to only listen to Christ and thus live according to God’s Word. That is what they long for.

Peter compares this fervent longing to babies who not only need milk to grow, but also desire  it. Peter uses this image not to compare their faith to babies, but to make clear the longing for pure nourishment. You need God’s Word every day to live with and for God. And to live in true love and peace with your brothers and sisters. No impure sources should be used to try and grow your faith life and your church life. Actively living with God’s Word you are able to grow together in love toward the Lord, holding fast to the truth (Eph. 4:16).

This can only happen if you truly love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Peter urges us to test ourselves whether we truly love the Lord and live by His forgiving grace: “if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” How else can this happen than by confessing your sins to Him and knowing that you are completely dependent on Him in everything?

How do you connect Bible, doctrine, and life?
