READ: 1 Pet. 4:12-19: Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, … but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, … If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, … For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God…
Peter gives further attention to the suffering of persecution, which can be very intense and can overwhelm you as a believer. The Lord Jesus had prepared his disciples for it (John 16:33), but extra encouragement is necessary.
As a Christian, you must continue to see that this is the path you must take, and even be joyful about it because it points to your communion with Christ, which will continue in your glorification (v.13).
That does not apply to suffering rightly for wrongdoing, such as committing murder or meddling in someone else’s affairs that do not concern you (v.15). No, you can only rejoice in insults if you receive them because of the Name of Christ (v.14). Then you are blessed and assured of the assistance of the Spirit, who makes you testify of Christ in your suffering. That is for His glory, even if others blaspheme Him. Suffering as a Christian brings you to give thanks and honor to God, and does not result in shame (v.16).
Therefore, God’s church on earth has to endure persecution as judgment that God deems necessary for them. This can be difficult for them. But how terrible will it be for those who disobey the Gospel of God and thus reject Christ? (v.17) If the righteous are saved through all the trials, what will become of the ungodly? (v.18) Therefore, as a believer, it is necessary to entrust your soul to God, the faithful and almighty Creator, and take refuge in Him. But this should be done in a life that is in accordance with Him, one that demonstrates that your faith is genuine (v.19).
