READ: Deut. 3:1-10; 31:1-8
… Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings; so will the Lord do to all the kingdoms through which you pass. You must not fear them, for the Lord … fights for you. – Deut. 3:21,22
After 40 years of wandering, the people of Israel are finally permitted to enter the promised land. During that long time, they have been tested on the genuineness of their faith; many showed unbelief and died in the wilderness. Despite all the great acts and gracious gifts of the LORD, they were rebellious (Dathan and Abiram), discouraged and discontented (as at Massah and Meribah), fearful (after spying out Canaan), or easily led astray (as with the golden calf or at Baal Peor). Now, the conquest of Canaan begins. How will this people be able to do it?
Moses first gives an extensive sermon to teach the people to follow, serve, and honor the LORD in a way that pleases Him. He looks back on what has happened since Horeb.
Joshua will be the new leader, for Moses is not allowed to enter the land (Num. 20:12). Joshua is one of the two spies who remained faithful to the LORD. He succeeds Moses, which requires loyalty and courage. Leading the people is not easy, and the enemies are also formidable.
Joshua is encouraged several times: at his appointment (Num. 27:18) by Moses, now reiterated in Moses’ sermon; later again (Deut. 31:1-10); and finally, directly by the LORD after Moses’ death (Josh. 1). Joshua must trust in the LORD, for it is He who fights for Israel. Just like His victory over the mighty kings Og and Sihon, the LORD will always triumph. That encouragement is also intended for the people and for us.
We need not be afraid of the wicked, hostile world, driven by the great adversary, even though we are small in number and strength. Let us also remember the great acts that the LORD has done so that we can confidently walk in the paths that He prescribes for us. He ensures victory in His Son (Rev. 6:2), it is firm and certain.
Are you ever discouraged about faith and church?
