JUNE 23, 2023 – GOD IS YOUR LIFE

READ: John 11:17-27

… for He is your life and the length of your days…– Deut. 30:30

Moses points to the far-reaching consequences of life on earth and the choices we make. In the new covenant through Christ, we have come into a different position. The Holy Spirit can now dwell and work in us, enabling us to love God. Yet the covenantal choice has not become obsolete, but has in fact become even more urgent. The new testament now speaks of remaining in God’s love or not. Our responsibility is greater with so much reason for gratitude (Rom. 12:1,2). Let us not grieve the Holy Spirit!

What Moses held out to Israel as “blessing” in verse 19 has more meaning in Christ: He brought us back to God as Father and under His blessing. In Him, we already receive all the good that is necessary, and in His strength, we also produce good fruit. Through Him, everything is in the right relationship with God.

In Christ, we see more of God’s love, goodness, and mercy. Our outlook is this: if God is for us, who can be against us? who can separate us from the love that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord? When Moses in verse 20 interprets God’s blessing more deeply as ” He is your life and the length of your days”. It means that true life comes only from God. Salvation from the grave is found only in Him.

We now know that our life, in fellowship with Christ, is a reconciled life: the eternal life that He has earned for us. The true life that will be continued in eternal glory. He is the Resurrection and the Life. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life for us. In Him, God makes all things work together for good (Rom. 8:28). But the demand of the covenant remains: it is only for those who love God and accept Christ as their only Savior.
