June 25, 2023 – LIKE AN EAGLE

READ: Deut. 32:7-15: Remember the days of old, … Jacob is the place of His inheritance. … He encircled him, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its wings, so the Lord alone led him, …

Moses’ song not only speaks of Israel’s unfaithfulness and deserved punishment from God, but it also speaks of God’s faithfulness and love. If Israel would hold onto that and live from it, they would not have to fear the threat of God’s punishment.

God’s faithful love and care are extensively and deeply measured in verses 7-14. In this, God speaks to the heart of His children. God’s love for His people can be read from His actions. Let them keep that in mind! In various ways, God has called attention to His great deeds: through the institution of the Passover in Egypt; through the law, and through Moses’ farewell speech. It was continuous education in the wilderness. And now, as they are about to enter the promised land, they hear it again in a gripping song. God’s people must constantly look back at what God has done for them.

That also applies to us. If we do not continue to pay attention to church history, in which God constantly preserved His church as His apple of the eye and brought it back to obedience to Christ, then we lose sight of God’s faithfulness and love. How easily do we then stray from Him!

See in  history how God determines everything among the nations in favor of His church. But also see how compassionately and lovingly He nurtures, protects and advances His children to be able to remain with Him in this godless world. Like an eagle with respect to its young…

If we lose sight of that, then verse 15 and beyond applies to us.

Does church history live as evidence of God’s faithfulness?
