JULY 1, 2023 – REPENTANCE

READ: Mark 1: 1-8: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.… John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.… “There comes One after me Who is mightier than I, He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

There are four descriptions in the Bible of the glorious Gospel, or good news, concerning Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and His redemptive work on earth. Each account, while sharing many similarities, emphasizes different aspects of the gospel. For example, in Mark’s Gospel there is an emphasis on the deliberate and continuing actions of Jesus Christ as the Messianic King who works with urgency towards completing His task. Hence, the recurring word “immediately” in this book, which appears 11 times in the first chapter alone.

Unlike Matthew and Luke, Mark does not mention the birth of Jesus but starts almost immediately with Jesus’ public work. He first points to the beginning of the good news: the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah in the coming and work of John the Baptist. His preparation involves preaching that the people must recognize their sins so that they realize how much they need Christ!

This requires a radical change of heart and life. Only then are they ready to receive the great King. Isaiah compares this to making a way in the desert, which is impassable due to stones.  What use is the work of Jesus as a Saviour if the people do not need Him? If they do not receive Him as their Saviour, they remain in their spiritual wilderness of sin and misery. John’s baptism points to confession of sins and the need for forgiveness, but his mission goes further. He also points to Jesus Himself, who is stronger and greater than he is.

Not John, but only Jesus, the Son of God, can forgive their sins. Through His Spirit, He can even work the radical transformation of their hearts and lives that is necessary for all who want to follow Him.

How often do you need thorough repentance
