SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 – THE WORD AT THE CENTER

READ: Acts 13:13-15

Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. – 1 Tim. 4:13,14:

Timothy needs to be encouraged and exhorted. Paul considers him as his disciple and son. He will surely want to visit him again, perhaps with a new task. Meanwhile, Timothy must continue independently. However, he is not alone; he can be assured of the assistance of the Spirit of Christ. He should simply continue to be engaged with the Word in the church.

First and foremost, this involves the Scripture reading. In that time, it would primarily be from the Old Testament, the Law, and the Prophets. This practice was also done by Christ and the apostles in the synagogue (Luke 4:16, Acts 13:15). After the Scripture has been read, Timothy must explain and apply the Word. This may involve admonishing and warning against false doctrine or misconduct.

The congregation also needs instruction in the teachings of the Scriptures to be nourished and strengthened and to learn how to live according to God’s Word. These are still essential elements of our liturgy today: Scripture reading and preaching. Prayer and congregational singing are not mentioned here, but they should also be central to our worship: the Word and its proclamation. Both admonition and instruction should always find their place in the preaching.

Timothy must be aware of the gracious gift given to him through the Holy Spirit at his ordination and continue to use it. It may include the gift of discerning spirits, as well as the ability to admonish and teach. This reminder should give him confidence in ministering God’s Word.

Are you regularly nourished by the preaching?
