OCTOBER 17, 2023 – IMMANUEL

READ: Is. 7:1-17

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Is. 7:14

The wicked King Ahaz is at war with the Syrians, who have the northern kingdom as an ally. He fears being dethroned (v.2). From whom can he still receive help? Due to God’s faithfulness to David, He is still gracious to the wicked Ahaz. Therefore, Isaiah comes with a message, “Be quiet and do not fear, Ahaz, for I am with you.” As a sign, Isaiah’s son is given the name Shear-Jashub, “a remnant shall return.”

Isaiah’s words are also encouraging (v.4): Do not be afraid of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands. But Ahaz does not accept these words. Another urgent warning follows: Ahaz, you can only stand firm if you believe. Ask the LORD for a sign for yourself.

Yet, Ahaz refuses even this: “I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD.” This may seem pious, but it’s offensive. He is pushing away God’s seeking hand. Isaiah rebukes him indignantly.

Still, the LORD gives Ahaz a sign: “Immanuel”, which means “God with us”, is intended for the believing remnant. A young woman gives her child this name. He will eat curds and honey, signifying that this will happen well before he reaches the age of discernment.

History tells us that the LORD rescues Judah from Rezin and Pekah. The war is called off. The faithful remnant sees this as salvation by God’s hand. However, the unbelieving Ahaz and his people, who expect assistance from the mighty Assyria, will face oppression by that same empire afterward (v. 17).

The further fulfillment of the Immanuel promise lies in the coming of Christ. He will be born of a virgin and be called ‘Immanuel,’ which means ‘God with us.’ This meaning applies to all who believe in Christ, accept God’s promises and may receive His Spirit (Matt.1:23,28:20).

How do we experience that God is with us?
