NOVEMBER 1, 2023 – HEIR

READ: Heb. 1:1-14… His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power … But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool?” …

The letter to the Hebrews is like one large sermon addressed to a congregation of Christ who are in danger of falling away from Him. There are very compelling words and exhortations spoken here, but above all, there is a rich comfort and encouragement. In essence, the letter has one main theme, that of Jesus Christ as the great Mediator, Leader, and Shepherd of the sheep. He has purchased His church with His blood and brought her to life from the dead.

The letter answers the question: Who is the Lord Christ to you as a church? Right away in Heb. 1, we read about the divinity and high glory of Christ. What Christ Himself proclaimed on earth, and after His Ascension through His apostles, is God’s own Word, just as it was prophesied in the Old Testament (v.1).

God’s Word thus possesses divine unity. At the same time, Christ as God’s Son is incomparably higher than the Old Testament prophets. Everything belongs to Him, for through Him everything was created, and He is the Heir of all things. Christ is the full truth of God in His own Person! He is, as God’s Son, the radiance and imprint of God’s essence. He is God Himself! Therefore, His Word is all-powerful: He upholds all things through it (v.3).

Christ is incomparably greater than angels. They are but created servants (v.14), while the Son has all authority as the heavenly King. After the reconciliation of our sins, the Name above every name was bestowed upon Him at His Ascension. Since He surpasses everything and everyone, rules over everything and everyone, and shares equal majesty with God the Father, He and His Word must be believed, accepted, and cherished (2:1).

Do we ever think too little of Christ?
