READ: Heb. 11:1-6: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for … By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God … By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain … By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death … But without faith it is impossible to please Him …
In this passage, we learn about the importance of persevering in faith. What does faith accomplish? First and foremost, it provides assurance of what you hope for from God’s promises and is convincing evidence that everything of God’s words is true even when you cannot see them. Faith is not a floating concept, nor solely a state of mind. It is directed towards real things and provides certainty about them, even when they are not visible.
God’s Word demonstrates that the fathers had such faith (v.2): God has blessed Abel, He took Enoch into heaven, He saved Noah in the ark, He gave Abraham descendants. They walked with God, had steadfast hope in Him, and believed in what they did not see. In John 20:29, the Lord Jesus says, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Likewise, we must consider the creation of the world (v.3). God spoke, and it came into being. God’s Word made the visible come into existence from the invisible. We should believe in what God has revealed about His creation in His Word. The Word clearly teaches us that God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing. He then formed creatures from it that did not exist before, according to their kinds.
The theory of evolution directly contradicts God and undermines God’s honor and can easily lead to a loss of faith. The text goes on to provide various examples of believers who demonstrated the value of faith in their lives. It begins with Abel. His offering was an expression of faithful worship to God. God noticed this faith and was pleased with it. His faith serves as an example for us to follow (v.4).
How does the theory of evolution influence the belief of Christians?
