NOVEMBER 25, 2023 – DISCIPLINE

READ: Heb. 12:1-13

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. – James 1:2,3

Chapter 11 concludes with the idea that previous believers who persevered in their faith found favor with God: they were taken up into heaven. However, the fulfillment of the promises has come with Christ, and it is extended to  everyone who shows true faith in Him and perseveres in it. Perfection will follow.

Let us also follow the example of these witnesses of faith, even when we face difficulties. They now watch as if to see whether we, too, endure in the race and in the struggle of faith (v.1). First, it is necessary that we lay aside every burden and sin. Every burden includes anything that prevents us from walking in godliness. This especially refers to sin that can entangle us, so we cannot progress (v.1).

Other Bible verses mention specific things to put away: Luke 21:34 (drunkenness, worries about everyday life), Colossians 3:8 (anger, wrath, malice, slanderous language), James 1:21 (filthiness and wickedness), 1 Peter 2:1 (malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, evil-speaking).

To persevere, it is indispensable to keep our eyes fixed firmly on Jesus. He is our Guide and the Perfecter of faith. He endured all disgrace and curses because He knew the joy that would follow: He is now seated at the right hand of the Father! (v.2) Follow Him also in how to endured suffering. And persevere. There will be even more intense battles against sin to persevere.

The LORD will also test us on the genuineness of our faith through trials and hardships. Do not see it as punishment but as discipline that a loving Father gives to His child. You will draw closer to God through it and become more devoted to Him. Accept this discipline because God does it for your good.

The trial itself may bring sadness, but later, you will see how beneficial it was: you may live in peace with God! (v.11) This gives courage and keeps you from stumbling.

What things may undermine your faith? What do you do about them?
