READ: Josh. 1:1-9
Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel.”– Josh. 1:2
The book of Joshua shows that the LORD fulfills His promises in all circumstances. Even in “impossible” situations, He keeps His Word and leads His people into the land He promised to their fathers and gives it to them. As the Church of Christ, this book is a source of encouragement, hope, and comfort for us on our journey to the heavenly Canaan.
When Moses was told that he could not enter the land because of the sin at Meribah, God Himself appointed a successor: Joshua, “a man in whom is the Spirit” (Num. 27:15-23). Joshua is publicly confirmed in his office. Initially, he was Moses’ servant (v.1), but then he takes his place as a servant of the LORD (Josh. 29:29). On behalf of God, he must shepherd and lead His people. Even his name, Joshua, means “the LORD saves.”
As a former spy, Joshua knows that leadership is not easy. What does the army of Israel amount to compared to strong trained warriors and virtually impregnable fortifications? Yet Joshua, along with Caleb, declared his faith: “Let us go up at once and take possession.” But the people, at that time, displayed unbelief and, for that reason, perished in the wilderness. How is the state of the people now?
However, Joshua can now be strengthened by God’s presence and help. At the beginning of his leadership, he is repeatedly told, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (vv.5,6,7).
This is not just an encouragement from God but also a command (v.9). When God offers Himself as a Helper and the source of strength on the way to the promised land, we should not complain, grumble, or despair. After all, it is God who gives them this land, and every place in this land (vv.2,3)! No one will be able to stand against them all the days of their life (v.5)!
Does this promise also apply to us as the Church?
