And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. – Rev. 2:18,19
Christ isn’t depicted here as the sweet, gentle Jesus, your friend. No, He presents Himself to His church as the divine, holy, and awe-inspiring King and Judge of the world.
His eyes, like a fiery flame, cannot tolerate anything unholy. They penetrate into the innermost being of a person. He is the one who searches hearts and minds (v. 23). You cannot hide anything from Him. He sees His church and its members as they truly are and will work according to His judgment upon His return. The church shouldn’t engage in the impure desires of the world. It should also be holy.
Christ’s feet like burnished bronze refer to His divine power. He is angered by sin. He judges with His eyes and punishes with His feet. Nothing and no one can stand against Him. This is how Christ presents Himself to His church. On one hand, to encourage it in its position in the world; on the other hand, to warn it not to compromise with the world, not to blur the boundaries between the Lord and His kingdom on one side and Satan and his kingdom on the other side. They are warned; the Lord will not be mocked.
Yet, Christ first says that despite the temptation and oppression from the world, Thyatira has a deeply rooted faith. There is faithfulness to Him and love for His service. There are fruits of faith in mutual service. There is faith, perseverance, and even growth: “Your last works are more than the first!” These works are pleasing to Him.
Faith, love, and deeds go hand in hand. In this church, the spiritual life flourishes, which is missing in so many other churches. A beautiful report from Christ, the Head of the church. But let’s also listen to His admonition.
