JANUARY 20, 2024 – WHITE GARMENTS

Once again, we read about rich promises to those who overcome. Firstly, Christ addresses the few who remained faithful to Him. They set their minds on things above, not on earthly things. They have shown a living faith and have taken refuge in His blood. Their garments have been washed in it and are unblemished. Soon, when united with their Savior, they will walk with Him.

Christ says they can do so because they are “worthy.” This doesn’t mean they earned it. No, they have lived with Him and genuinely demonstrated their love for Him. Out of grace, they receive the reward of grace: the fulfillment of promises. This includes walking with Christ in heavenly garments. The communion with Christ on earth continues in heaven.

From verse 5, Christ also addresses others in the church who repent and, in this way, overcome. They, too, receive the promises of white garments (the forgiveness of their sins). The image of garments in Scripture symbolizes the cleansing work of Christ (Matt. 22:11). They also may be blameless at His coming. Whoever seeks reconciliation with Christ may live with Him in heavenly festive garments alongside the countless multitude (Rev. 7:9,13,14; 19:8).

The second promise for the overcomers is the assurance of eternal life. Their names are in the Book of Life. God Himself first inscribed those names in the book, and they remain there. That is certain. On the final day, Christ will confess their names before God and His angels. This signifies acquittal and opens the way to eternal bliss.

These two wonderful promises encompass everything God has prepared for His own in Christ. They will only be fulfilled through a living faith in Him. Let’s pay close attention to this!
