Christ gives His oppressed church promises that extend beyond this earth. We hear about the new Jerusalem, the church of Christ, which is perfected by Him at His Second Coming. The church is being prepared for this on earth: it is descending. Christ bestows upon it all His heavenly gifts: His Word and Spirit sanctify and sustain it. He works urgently towards its completion.

The promise for those who persevere is that they will receive a secure and glorious place in the new Jerusalem. They will be like a pillar in the house, the temple of God, standing firm and adorning it. Despite being sinful people, God uses them for His glory.

On each pillar, three names will be written. The name of the Lord God, that of the city of the church, the new Jerusalem, and that of its Lord and Head, Jesus Christ. These three names make it clear to whom these pillars belong. They are also inseparably linked to each other.

Christ speaks here of “My” God as Mediator, as the Head of His church. He has brought His bride to God. He also speaks of His own “new name.” This is His name above all names, given to Him by God because of His accomplished work on earth. It is the name of our exalted Savior as King and Victor.

The comfort of these rich words applies to all faithful churches and church members who are led by Christ and firmly hold onto God’s Word against all opposition and deception. Christ also grants them victory in that struggle, with all the eternal joy and glory that comes with it.

How is our faithfulness and perseverance? Do we recognize the struggle?
