READ: 1 John 5:10-13: … And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. …
Faith in the Son of God is the acceptance of what God reveals about His Son in His Word. When you accept this as divine truth, this testimony permeates your heart. Additionally, there is the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the previous verses. The Spirit works faith by using the Word. Thus, certainty of faith concerning the Son of God increases (see also John 3:33).
However, those who do not believe in Jesus as the Christ sent by God reject God’s testimony about His Son and regard God as a liar. This is a very serious sin. Rejecting Jesus’s divinity is incompatible with faith in God.
God’s testimony regarding the Son grants you eternal communion with God the Father and the Son. Jesus said in John 5:25: “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” That life, this communion, exists in God’s Son.
Christ, like God the Father, is the Source of life and life itself (John 5:26; 11:25; 14:6). Verse 12 states succinctly: “Whoever has the Son has life.” That is, whoever has intimate communion has eternal life, which begins here on earth.
Those who reject Jesus as God’s Son remain in spiritual death that, without repentance, culminates in eternal death (John 3:36). Verse 13 doesn’t just refer back to the previous verses but to the entire letter. It emphasizes the decisive nature of the assured belief in Jesus as the Christ. It’s about your faith in Jesus involving the certain knowledge that you owe eternal life to Him. A life with and for God in Christ that extends to eternal glory.
Can you lose your faith? How?
