Then the men of Beth Shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? – 1 Sam. 6:20a
The men of Beth-Shemesh offer sacrifices as an expression of gratitude. That is a good thing. But that’s not all. For shortly afterward, the LORD inflicts a terrible slaughter among the small population: seventy of the approximately 1500 inhabitants are killed by Him.
How can the LORD express His wrath after their offerings? The people are deeply saddened and do not understand. They can imagine that God punishes the Philistines; they deserve it. But them? They cry out in verse 20, “Who can stand before the face of the LORD, this holy God?”
However, something has indeed happened that provoked God’s wrath. The men have looked into the ark of the LORD. They have not shown the reverence that the LORD requires of them. They have reached out their hands to His throne. That is blasphemy. Their attitude was not humble towards Him, who is holy and exalted. They should have known that the LORD does not leave such behaviour unpunished.
No one can see the LORD and live. He tolerates no unholiness. Not long ago, the ark of the LORD was carried by the Israelites in the army as a mascot. With this, they humiliated the LORD, reducing Him to an idol. As punishment, He allowed many thousands of men to fall, and the ark was taken. Despite all this, the LORD now returns to His people as a sign of His great faithfulness and love.
Yet, He remains a holy and fearsome God! The same happens in David’s time, with Uzzah, who reaches out his hand to the ark. God’s love and faithfulness to His church must all the more urge her to show reverence, love, and true gratitude to Him. Israel must learn this here.
We must continue to realize this as well. For the LORD, with all His mercy, love, and compassion, is a consuming fire for those who profane Him. Be pleasing to Him (Hebr. 12:28-29)!
When and how can God punish us as a church?
