READ: Is. 40:12-20: Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span, and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as His counselor has taught Him? … Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales … All nations before Him are as nothing …
The message is: God is incomparable in His majesty, greatness, wisdom, and omnipotence. Israel must realize this when they are in exile, and God comes with His glorious gospel of salvation. Let them not doubt God but place their full trust in Him.
After all, He is incomparably greater and more powerful than those nations. Compared to Him, they are nothing more than a drop in a bucket or a speck of dust on the scales. How mighty is God’s work of creation!
When you look at the vastness of mountains, seas, and the sky, what is man? How can he measure these dimensions with anything of his own? But God has made all of this. If creation is so impressive, how great is God! Man can do nothing against God in terms of power and strength.
God is also infinitely beyond man in terms of His insight and wisdom in creation and history. Who could have advised God in this? God Himself sees that His creatures are nothing compared to Him.
The answer to Isaiah’s question must always be: there is only one Almighty God; there is no other. As Creator, He is incomparable to anything or anyone. Everything else that exists is merely the work of His hands.
Mankind, in itself, is limited, finite, and temporary. God is infinite, eternal, and unchanging in all His attributes and actions. We must always keep this infinite distance between God and man in mind.
It is an even more grievous error to entertain the delusion of comparing idols with God – lifeless things, made by human hands.
Do we sufficiently realize how great God is?
