Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away … – James 1:9-11
In all churches, among church members, there are those who are wealthy and others who have modest incomes. For both, extra reflection on behavior and conduct within the congregation is necessary.
It also presents a trial: how to rightly handle one’s situation? Does the significant difference in income and lifestyle lead to a different status in the church?
James delivers a poignant message to both the poor and the rich. Let the poor, the humble, realize that they are rich and have a high position in God’s Kingdom. They should not be envious of the rich who can enjoy so much more of this world, but focus on what is most important in this life: to seek God’s kingdom (Matt. 6:33). If you live close to the Lord and expect everything for your livelihood from Him, you have a high position (John 1:12).
For every church member, the words of the Lord Jesus apply: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3) and: “He who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).
For the rich, the warning is this: let them not rely on their wealth; they cannot use it to buy salvation.
The Lord Jesus showed the rich young man and His disciples the dangers of wealth (Matt. 19:16-26): “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
The trial in wealth is that one becomes attached to it and fails to see that it is God who has given it, in order that it may be used within His kingdom where it is needed. If, however, a wealthy person, out of gratitude, uses their money to care for the poor, it is God’s work (Matt. 19:26). Then the rich have understood what it means to be humble and can boast in that.
Thus, the members of the Pentecostal church have acted, setting an example for us (Acts 4:34).
