READ: 2 Sam. 22:30-51: … As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is proven … … You have also given me the shield of Your salvation … For You have armed me with strength for the battle …
The words of the LORD are pure, meaning that God’s Word is flawless. It is true! God’s Word is written for our salvation and preservation. It is true, pure, and holy. It promises a sure outcome of a certain deliverance.
David clung to God’s steadfast promises: promises that he would reign as king over God’s people and that his house would endure, with his greater Son reigning forever (v.51). God worked faith in David’s heart and strengthened his trust through adversity.
David experienced that God’s way could be difficult, but he continually relied on the pure and trustworthy words of God. This was especially true when faced with human lies that sought to cast doubt on God’s promises, often mocking and insulting God in the process.
David expressed what he knew from Ps. 19:7: “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” Through God’s Word, David gained understanding. He learned to know God but also his own sinful nature. God’s Word led David to confess his sins and humble himself before God. Even in his deepest suffering, he clung to God.
In verses 33-34, he writes: “And He makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer. and sets me on my high places. He teaches my hands to make war so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.”
The LORD did not abandon David on the path He set for him. God provided everything he needed for the fight. He was his shield, a shield of salvation. In Him, David felt secure (v.36).
Thus, the LORD guided David throughout his life, leading David to praise and glorify Him in this song of thanksgiving.
King David was also a prophet; are we as well?
