JANUARY 28, 2025 – FINAL WORDS

READ: 2 Sam. 23:1-7: … He who rules over mankind must be just … And He shall be like the light of the morning … with fire …

This chapter contains David’s final words. He describes the purpose and meaning of his life under the guidance of the LORD. Born the son of Jesse, a shepherd, and thus of humble origin, he was called and equipped by the LORD to be His servant (v.1). Thus, David was greatly exalted.

He reveals that the Holy Spirit not only inspired the Psalms but also these last words (v.2). He says: “His word was on my tongue.” The message is so far-reaching and glorious that every listener must recognize it as God’s Word, not David’s personal thoughts. It demands full attention.

As David nears death, he recalls God’s promises (2 Sam. 7:12; Acts 2:29-31) and prophesies about the great King who will descend from him. He refers to Him as the “Ruler” over mankind in His kingly role and as the “Just One” in His priestly role (see also Ps. 110, another Psalm of David).

David sees himself as merely a shadow of this King. He acknowledges his own insignificance, weakness, and sinfulness as he speaks of the coming Messiah. David’s life revealed his flaws and sins, but now he rejoices over the Redeemer who will perfectly uphold God’s justice and bring true life.

David compares Him to the morning light, the rising sun shining in a clear sky, under which new greenery grows after rain.

Although aware of his own unworthiness (v.5), David confidently speaks of an eternal covenant: God’s promises will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ, who will establish an eternal kingdom. Though unseen, it is certain!

This brings great joy to David and to all who love God.

Do you understand the imagery of light and greenery?
