READ: Jude 12-16: … Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’ These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.
Jude now points to the terrible judgment that awaits these sinners when the Lord returns with His final judgment. He cites the prophecy of Enoch, who, only seven generations after Adam, already spoke about this final judgment. This was even before the Flood.
Enoch’s prophecy concerns the certain final judgment in which every person will be judged by God and His holy angels. All the ungodly of all times will be condemned, without exception. All their ungodly deeds will serve as evidence for their condemnation.
The seriousness and repulsiveness of their actions and speech are emphasized by the fact that the word “ungodly” is used three times in one sentence to describe these sinners.
The condemnation also rests on the harsh words they have spoken against the Lord God Himself. With arrogant words, they have placed themselves above and against God, whereas a creature should speak only in humility and dependence of the Almighty and good God.
These people are also characterized by dissatisfaction with what has been allotted to them. They are greedy and follow their desires. Everything is about self-gratification and self-preservation at the expense of others.
This description serves as a warning to anyone who recognizes such tendencies in themselves to repent.
