READ: John 5:24-29

… being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ. – Phil. 1:6-8:

The sincere faith life of the Philippian church is seen by Paul as God’s own work. Since God planted it in their hearts, He will remain faithful and sustain it. He will even bring their faith to perfection on the final day—when Christ will return in judgment but also to reward His faithful followers (Matt. 25:14-23). The faithful will then be brought to glory.

Paul affirms that his loving attention for this church is justified. He carries them in his heart; his affection extends not just to a few members but to all.

Why? Paul explains that it is not just because they have helped him. It goes deeper than that. He has recognized in them the same faith, a faith in which God’s grace shines. They have also acknowledged the grace given to Paul to preach the gospel, even in difficult circumstances.

They valued this and supported Paul through their prayers and actions. They provided for his needs, allowing him to continue preaching and thereby participating in the spread of the gospel themselves. They did not abandon Paul when he was imprisoned but continued to support him.

Paul calls God as his witness, swearing by Him to emphasize how deep and sincere his bond with them is. His heart longs for them with the affection of Christ.

What are “the deep affections of Jesus Christ”?
