APRIL 6, 2025 – IMPRISONMENT

READ: Acts 23:1-11; 28:16-31.

But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. – Phil. 1:12-14

Paul writes to the brothers and sisters, explaining that even in prison, he has had the opportunity to speak about the Gospel. He knows that the church in Philippi is deeply concerned about his trial. After all, he has been accused of being a dangerous revolutionary and of spreading false teachings about Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 23:29; 24:5; 25:9).

Apparently, he has been given the opportunity to defend himself. Paul explains that he has been able to share the message of Christ with all the people in the judicial system and that his imprisonment is solely because of the Gospel of Christ.

While the believers in Philippi are worried about him, Paul himself is actually grateful that his imprisonment has helped advance the preaching of the Gospel. He understands the Lord’s will: he must go to the emperor in Rome to testify about the Gospel there (Acts 23:11).

Now he has had the opportunity to proclaim Christ to all the guards, staff, and fellow prisoners! He has explained to them that Christ, the Redeemer, is the only reason for his imprisonment.

Paul sees this as a great encouragement and a reason to continue preaching God’s Word fearlessly. The same applies to most of the brothers who visit him and pray for him. Seeing Paul’s boldness strengthens their own trust in the Lord, encouraging them to continue spreading the Gospel in a hostile world.

What opportunities do we have to evangelize?

Sing: Ps. 71:8,13
