READ: Phil. 1:27,28: Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God.
The congregation should not worry too much about Paul’s situation. The Lord knows what is good for him. What matters for the church is to continue showing a living faith. They had joyfully accepted the gospel and testified about it. Now, they must persevere in that living faith with a way of life that aligns with Christ and His Word.
The Lord asks for faith that works through love, bearing the fruits of faith, trusting in Him even in times of oppression by adversaries, and bringing honor to God in Christ.
In Rom. 5, Paul says: “We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” The church in Philippi also faced oppression from adversaries.
The most important thing is that they hold firmly to God’s Word and support one another. Paul says: “Stand fast in one spirit, strive together with one mind for the faith of the gospel.”
This is crucial for the perseverance of faith in the church at all times. It begins with faith in the gospel, the Word of God. We must be led by God’s Spirit. But we must also build each other up with God’s Word to be united in the struggle.
The word used here for striving means wrestling. It refers to perseverance, where the congregation should not be frightened, scattered, or overpowered by adversaries. Along this path, they may expect salvation from God by His grace, while their adversaries await God’s judgment.
How do you promote unity in the church today?
