APRIL 15, 2025 – WILLING AND DOING

READ: Phil. 2:12,13: Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Christ had begun a good work in Philippi. Faith had flourished there, and Paul was very joyful about it. They had received the gospel from him. However, he could not stay there indefinitely. They had to trust and obey God even without him.

In Phil. 1:27, he said, “walk in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” His presence should not determine the strength of their faith. He had just spoken about their fellowship with Christ, which brings joy and peace. Christ had humbled Himself on the cross for His own, but now reigns over them from heaven with power and glory.

Paul now draws a conclusion: “Therefore.” Therefore—because Christ has given you the ultimate example of absolute obedience and deepest humility. Therefore—because Christ now has the power to grant you complete salvation and fulfill all of God’s promises, keeping you secure. Therefore—because you know this Christ Jesus, continue to obey Him and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Their faith should not depend on their connection with Paul but on their relationship with Christ. Paul could not fulfill what Christ required of them: namely, following Him and living in a way worthy of His gospel. They were to commit themselves fully—with fear and trembling, in holiness (compare Heb. 12:21), humility, dependence, and wholehearted obedience to Christ.

In this way, they would do what God Himself was working in them, allowing them to persevere in faith toward eternal salvation. The Philippians had already demonstrated obedience, but they needed to grow in it.

Yet, it was not their own works but God working through His Spirit in their hearts (BC, Art. 24).

How do you practically apply this encouragement?
