READ: Dan. 1:8-16: … But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself … and tested them ten days … better and fatter in flesh …
The boys are required to eat and drink things that God’s law forbids. Moreover, Nebuchadnezzar has a close connection with his idols through this food and drink. Meat and pastries are dedicated to idols before being consumed. Part of the wine is first poured out as an offering to the god of fertility and pleasure before it may be drunk.
Daniel determines this in his heart! He resolves not to let it happen. He doesn’t first try it out to see how bad it really is. Because he knows from God’s Word that this is against God and therefore sinful. His spirit would be defiled by it, causing him to drift away from God.
The deep root of defilement lies in spiritual contamination, as adultery with idols. This has been the case since paradise when Adam and Eve were contaminated by the forbidden fruit. Eating it caused them to break God’s covenant. We too are tempted by the idols of alcohol, sex and pleasure, bread and games, greed, and ambition. This is never something harmless.
Daniel understood that his heart must be directed toward the LORD and His commandments. Paul points out that idol worship and serving the LORD cannot go together (2 Cor. 6:15f). What Daniel resolves in his heart does not let him go. God gives him the strength to take action so that he will not be defiled.
He asks Ashpenaz, the chief of the court officials, for permission not to defile himself. God ensures that Ashpenaz is favorable to Daniel. Verse 9 says God gave Daniel favor and compassion with this man!
Daniel’s request poses a danger to Ashpenaz. He could be harshly punished because Daniel’s proposal thwarts Nebuchadnezzar’s plan. But Ashpenaz agrees to the test—with remarkable success! Daniel is strengthened and sees that the LORD is gracious to him and his friends.
Does God also test us to see what is in our hearts? (Deut. 8:2)?
