READ: Gal. 6:9–10: …And let us not grow weary while doing good…

Doing good to your neighbor. That requires a spiritual attitude in which the Spirit can work. It involves a struggle with yourself, with your own ego. You often have to overcome something within yourself: sacrifice, extra effort. The key questions are: Why are you doing it? And, most importantly, for Whom are you doing it?

It is possible to act with the wrong motives—for example, to gain recognition or to be appreciated. But even if you act with sincere intentions—because the Lord asks it of you, and because you love your neighbor—disappointment can still follow. Perhaps the one you are trying to help doesn’t appreciate it, or others paint you in a bad light. You might get so frustrated that you withdraw.

But consider the example of the Lord Jesus Himself. How much opposition He faced in doing good! How much He had to endure! Yet He persevered—unto death. He did good not only to the thief on the cross, but loved all His own—even when they abandoned Him—until the end.

Paul compares doing good to sowing seed. Sowing is hard work, and at first you see little result—but later comes the harvest. Paul emphasizes that sowing by doing good through the Spirit—even when it’s hard—will result in a harvest.

If you stop sowing, there will be no harvest. But if you persevere, the harvest will surely come. In due time—that is, at the time determined by God. It is the harvest of the reward of grace, the harvest of eternal life.

Paul includes himself when he says “we.” He has sown much through his preaching, encouragement, and admonition—in many regions, including Galatia. He has endured intense opposition and persecution (2 Cor. 1:3–11). Yet he knows that he will one day receive the crown of righteousness (2 Tim. 4:7–8).

Let us therefore do good to all people—but especially to the family of faith (v.10).
