READ: Ex. 9:1–12: … all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died … And they caused boils that break out in sores on man and beast … But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh …
The consequences of the plagues keep growing more severe. The pestilence that strikes the livestock is so devastating that no animals survive in the entire land—except in Goshen, where the Israelites live. The Egyptians even confirm this distinction (v.7).
Everything the LORD foretells with each command becomes reality: the timing, the outcome, and the protection of Israel. All of it confirms God’s almighty power and faithfulness.
How then is it possible that Pharaoh continues in unbelief? This reflects the battle of Satan against the LORD. Satan blinds people, as he always has. Even when it’s clear that God is victorious, the devil persists. That’s his nature—until Christ completely destroys his power on the final day (Rev.20:10). Until then, we are warned: Satan knows his time is short (Rev.12:12).
At the same time, it’s clear from the beginning that the LORD intended to harden Pharaoh’s heart, to demonstrate His greatness to Israel and to intensify judgment upon His enemies.
After the fifth plague, the sixth plague comes without warning. Moses throws soot into the air before Pharaoh, and boils break out on all Egyptians, people and animals alike.
Now, for the first time, we read clearly: “The LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (v.12).
As the plagues progress, the judgment becomes more intense. This will be even more evident in the final four.
Is the Church spared from disasters today? (cf. Rev.7:3)
