SEPTEMBER 23, 2025 – DETOUR

READ: Ex. 13:17–14:9:…Lest perhaps the people change their minds…

The LORD knows His people—even in their weaknesses. We read this in verses 13:17–18. Instead of taking them directly through Philistine territory to Canaan, the LORD leads them on a detour. This way, they won’t immediately face battle.

The people are not trained for war; in fear, they might want to return to Egypt. Of course, God could easily defeat the enemy—as will be shown later—but He wants to spare His people from fear.

Furthermore, God had told them they would serve Him in the wilderness at Mount Horeb (Ex. 3:18; 5:1,3; 7:16; 8:27). And it’s also a way to mislead Pharaoh (14:3). He will think they are lost. Then the LORD will harden Pharaoh’s heart so he chases after them.

But the main reason is in 13:17: it is an expression of God’s love and care—His faithfulness and mercy. He wants to protect His people during the deliverance.

This is written down for us too, as His church in the 21st century. The LORD still leads us on difficult paths. But if we follow Him, we will reach the destination He has prepared.

In verse 19, Moses takes the bones of Joseph, fulfilling the oath made to him. This confirms that God will truly bring them to the promised land.

God’s protective presence is shown in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. The people can always see it, and it strengthens them.

Thus, they arrive—on God’s appointed path—at the Red Sea. The LORD gives Moses further instructions (14:1ff). They must appear lost. Pharaoh will take notice and pursue them. “Then I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army.”

And indeed, Pharaoh comes with all his chariots. Israel has been informed that this is God’s plan—do they now trust Him?

Does God also lead us by a detour? (See 2 Peter 3:9)
