SEPTEMBER 25, 2025 – WHO IS LIKE YOU?

READ: Ex. 15:1–21: … He is my God, and I will praise Him … Your right hand, O Lord, has become glorious in power … You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them … Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? … The Lord shall reign forever and ever …

It was the LORD alone who redeemed His people through the Red Sea. No human hand was involved in the battle against the Egyptians. Only God the Father and the Son were active. God used the sea water and the seabed, but also natural forces like darkness (v.20), heavy storms, and lightning (cf. Ps. 77:18–19).

Israel, who had first reacted in fear, now realizes this: the LORD performed an unparalleled miracle by saving them through the sea and destroying all their enemies.

This awareness causes Moses and the people to break into a song of praise, glorifying the LORD. The song celebrates the greatness of God with deep awe. Everything God did in the battle is mentioned briefly but powerfully. It ends in worship: “Who is like You, glorious in holiness, awesome in praises, doing wonders?” He is more powerful than all idols, behind whom the devil hides.

They also express full confidence that God will bring them to the land of promise (v.17): Canaan, where the LORD will dwell among them in His sanctuary, just as He promised Abraham. Therefore: “The LORD shall reign forever and ever.”

This song ends in worship and a beautiful confession. May the people hold on to this through the whole wilderness journey! Knowing that if the LORD leads and protects them, all will be well, no matter the opposition or hardship they face.

After Moses’ song, there is a second song led by Miriam and all the women: “Sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!”

Why is Christ called “our Red Sea” (Belgic Confession, Article 34)?

Sing: Ps. 106:4–5
