OCTOBER 29, 2025 – ALL THINGS FREELY GIVEN

READ: Rom. 8:31-34: … If God is for us, who can be against us?…

 Paul writes in verse 31: “What then shall we say to these things?” This refers to the gospel truth that as children of God we are also heirs, but that we only reach that inheritance through suffering. In this, God helps our weakness through His Spirit and governs everything so that it works out for our good.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. In this way, God accomplishes the purpose for which He has called us and will ultimately justify and glorify us.

Paul now asks: what is the conclusion of all this? As believers who know these things, we should not fix our eyes on adversity and opposition. Rather, let us focus on God’s love, grace, mercy, omnipotence, and faithfulness.

If God has called us to be His children, if He is for us, who can be against us? Who then can keep us from our inheritance? Who can contend with God? If God is for us, that is the decisive factor. If He is favorable toward us, if He makes all things work together for our good, what does human opposition really mean?

But how is it possible that the Lord is for us? Did we earn that ourselves? Paul points to the foundation of God’s favor: “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”

The giving up of His own Son for us is the deepest and greatest proof of God’s unfathomable love. If God has already done that for us, will He not also give us all the treasures that Christ has earned for us — deliverance from all misery, acquittal, and eternal life in glory?

And more: If God’s grace means that on the basis of Christ’s glorious work of reconciliation we are declared righteous by Him, who then can still accuse us? Moreover, the risen, living Christ intercedes for us daily on the basis of His sacrifice. What a rich gospel!
