READ: Jn. 21:15–25: … Yes, Lord; You know that I love You … the third time … do you love Me? … Follow Me …

After breakfast, Jesus directs Himself to Simon Peter. The disciples have just seen their apostolic work symbolized in the miraculous catch, orchestrated by Jesus, yet carried out through them. But among them stands Peter—the one who denied Jesus three times. A very serious sin, which the Lord takes deeply to heart.

In Matt. 10 Jesus had already taught them about being sent and had warned them against fear when persecuted. He had said that whoever confesses Him before men, He will confess before the Father; but whoever denies Him, He will deny before the Father. Denying Him is, according to Jesus, a grave sin.

Peter had been specifically warned only hours before that he would deny Him three times. Now that he has done so, can he still be an apostle?

Jesus surely forgave him personally, since Peter has returned to Him—but the apostolic office requires complete trust in and love for the Lord. It must also be visible to others. They must be examples, even if it leads to martyrdom.

Therefore, the Lord asks three times whether Peter truly loves Him. After each answer, Jesus entrusts him with the care of His flock. Finally, Jesus also indicates the death Peter will suffer because of Him. A servant is not above His Lord; yet through it God will be glorified.

The most important thing remains: to follow Christ in everything (v.19)!

How can we show our love for Christ?
