READ: Ps. 4:1–9: … There are many who say, ‘Who will show us any good?’ …
When David composed this psalm is unknown, perhaps during the time when he was fleeing from Saul or from his son Absalom. Regardless, it was written as David was experiencing injustice and was in distress. He appeals to the LORD, his God.
Verse 2: “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!” David knows that God judges according to His justice. When people falsely oppose him in his office as the anointed of the LORD, he may leave it to the LORD.
They are men of rank, but they love vanity (v.3). But David knows himself safe with God and strengthens himself in Him: I am His favoured one; the LORD hears when I call to Him.
David also points his adversaries to the right way: to tremble before the LORD over their sinful actions and no longer continue to sin. Let them stop slandering and come to their senses. Let them offer the sacrifices of righteousness and put their trust in the LORD.
David lays his distress before the LORD. He can give deliverance; He is a gracious God. At the same time, he calls the men to repentance. In verse 7 he says, “There are many who say, ‘Who will show us any good?’” Possibly he and his own men suffer poverty, hunger, and unrest. Serving the LORD brings only trouble and danger. Will that never end? When will better times finally come? From where does our help come, in whom is our expectation? Many see no way out of distress.
David’s answer to the question posed is: “LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.” David does not seek earthly treasures or pleasures. He seeks the good that comes from the LORD. His desire is not primarily for grain and new wine, as with others, but for the favour, lovingkindness, and blessing of the LORD God. That is far and away the best. That gives true joy.
That blessed lovingkindness meets us fully in Christ. That gives us true peace with the LORD and true peace in our hearts. That gives us rest and security under all circumstances.
What is “the good” for you personally?
