READ: Ps. 11:1–7: In the LORD I put my trust; How can you say to my soul, ‘Flee as a bird to your mountain’? … If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do? … The LORD tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. … For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.
David finds himself in a difficult situation. We do not know to which moment this refers. David dissuades his fearful companions from fleeing (v.1). Instead, he points them to the LORD. He is their refuge.
The troubles that seize even David consist of this, that “the wicked,” fellow countrymen who do not honour the LORD seek to kill the “upright in heart,” the believers. For this they lay ambushes. The circumstances make it easy for the wicked, for “the foundations are destroyed.”
By foundations are meant authority, order, justice, norms and values. Anarchy, lawlessness, and injustice prevail. Everyone becomes a law to himself. Thus it was in the time of the judges; thus it always is when man rises up against God. This was restrained only under theocratic kings such as David, Solomon, Hezekiah, and Josiah. Apart from this, godly life was often very distressing, with extreme consequences for those who wished to serve the LORD according to His Word.
We also see this taking ever greater forms in our society. There is no longer authority; lawlessness is increasing alarmingly. Believers find it increasingly difficult to obey God’s commandments. But let us also take refuge in the LORD in heaven, for from His heavenly throne He sees and examines everyone and everything (v.4).
Yes, the LORD tests and tries believers: He wants us, in affliction and injustice, to go to Him in prayer and to continue trusting in Him. “He who is unjust, let him be unjust still … he who is righteous, let him be righteous still” (Rev. 22:11).
The LORD will ultimately render justice upon all people, with judgment upon unbelievers and with His eternal fellowship in glory for all who have loved Him (v.7).
Do you have an example of injustice toward believers?
