APRIL 27, 2026 – STRUGGLE AND PRAYER

READ: Rom. 15:30–33: Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me …

As an apostle in his work for Christ, Paul experienced much hardship, care, and struggle. From unbelieving Jews and Gentiles his life was often in danger (cf. 2 Cor. 1:8–11).

Also within the congregations he frequently encountered resistance to the gospel he had brought, as in Corinth and among the Galatians. He experienced what sincere prayer for him accomplished.

When Paul shares his heaviest trials with the congregation at Corinth, he mentions the importance of their intercession (2 Cor. 1:10–11). God answered these prayers, which gave reason for great thanksgiving. Paul also knows himself supported by the prayers of the congregation at Philippi (Phil. 1:19).

Thus here he calls upon the congregation at Rome to pray for him. It is for him a great necessity. Again Paul refers to the work of Christ in him and to their mutual fellowship through the Spirit.

He describes this prayer as a struggle, a wrestling (cf. Col. 4:12; Gen. 32:23–30). It concerns an intense, fervent, yearning prayer, in which God is implored for grace and deliverance. Especially he is concerned about what awaits him in Jerusalem from hostile unbelieving Jews, and also about how the brothers will receive the collection and how they stand regarding Jewish customs.

Paul hopes that God will grant a good outcome and that he may come to Rome with joy. Whatever happens, true peace may be found with God. That is what Paul wishes the congregation.

Do you sometimes experience your own prayer as a struggle?
