MAY 3, 2026 – NABOTH

READ: 1 Kin. 21:1–28: … there was no one like Ahab, who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD …

King Ahab, who has his royal palace in Samaria, often resides in his summer palace in Jezreel. There he sees a vineyard near his palace belonging to Naboth. Ahab wishes to buy it and makes an attractive offer: a better vineyard elsewhere or its value in money.

But Naboth refuses. The vineyard is inherited property, which he must regard as allotted to him by the LORD. “The LORD forbid that I should give it to you.”

Naboth refers to the law in Lev.25:18, 23–28. There it is stated that the land belongs to God; He remains the true Owner. Even if sold due to poverty, it must be returned in the Year of Jubilee. Thus it remains in the family. The proposed exchange would violate this. Therefore Naboth appeals to the LORD in his decision.

Ahab returns angrily and sulks. Jezebel assures him she will resolve the matter. Her deceitful plan results in Naboth’s death on false charges, even misusing God’s name. All those involved with her plan cooperate, even those who likely knew Naboth as God-fearing. It is a dreadful, heaven-provoking condemnation of a righteous man.

Elijah pronounces God’s judgment: Ahab and Jezebel will be cut off; dogs will devour their bodies. Though Jezebel incited him, Ahab remains fully responsible; he sold himself to evil beyond all before him.

Is it ever permissible to resist lawful authority?
Singing: Ps. 75:4,6
