JUNE 2, 2026 – POSSESSION

READ: Ps. 33:1–22: … Sing to Him a new song …

This Psalm sings of the omnipotence, faithfulness, and government of the LORD with respect to all His creation. Psalm 32 ends with the call: rejoice in the LORD, be glad, all you upright. Thus Psalm 33 also begins with the same call: “praise is fitting for the upright.”

While the forgiveness of the LORD is central in Ps. 32, Ps. 33 points even more to the virtues of the LORD through which He regards man and His creation. His divine majesty, His omnipresence, and His lovingkindness are particularly emphasized.

In just a few words, the psalm beautifully expresses that creation came into being out of nothing, by the power of God’s Word. All this must bring us to adoration, over against the God-dishonoring ideas of evolution, which are also adhered to by some Christians.

God’s acts of creation as described in His Word have divine reliability (v.4). God’s lovingkindness also shines in His providence by which He sustains everything and everyone. The LORD in His holiness stands opposed to all ungodly counsels of heathen nations, where Satan seems to have the rule. He ensures that—whatever they devise—His will is always carried out. This is of great comfort to His people, His church.

His elect church is therefore to be congratulated: they are the possession of the LORD and may be assured of His continual favour, love, and protection. This applied to Israel as the people of God of the Old Testament; it also applies now to the church of Jesus Christ of the New Testament.

Also, we now know that God knows all hearts and all deeds of man; there is nothing that escapes His attention or happens outside His government, although everyone remains responsible for his own thoughts and actions.

Furthermore, God is more powerful than any earthly power whatsoever. This also is of great comfort for believers: He will protect them against their enemies and deliver them. Believers also will die once, but their souls are saved from eternal death.

Therefore our expectation is from the LORD! In Him we hope!
