READ: Ps. 49:1-21: … like the beasts that perish … But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for He shall receive me

This Psalm testifies of divine wisdom that Scripture teaches concerning the destiny of people on earth as determined by God (cf. the book of Ecclesiastes). Everyone is invited to listen to this (vs.2).

Special attention is given to the fate of the rich who exploit others on earth on the one hand and their victims who seek their hope and consolation from the LORD on the other hand. You can directly relate this to the oppressed and persecuted church with her oppressors.

Poor people here are believers who on earth indeed are poor, but at the same time are blessed (Matt. 5:3). There is for them no reason to be fearful. For mighty and rich people who abuse their position of power and trust in themselves are not saved; they cannot save themselves or another  from death. Even though they see no danger, there is for them no eternal life (vs.8,9). Their prosperity also will not continue endlessly to their descendants (vs.12). In fact they are rich fools: their end is decay in the grave.

In contrast to these rich and mighty fools, the fate of the believer is very different. Even though he has it difficult here on earth because of opposition and ungodliness, he has a glorious future. For God will save his soul from the power of death and grave. Yes, his body indeed will see decay, but God through Christ redeems his soul to receive him into glory.

What the rich cannot do, the poor may indeed expect: deliverance from death and eternal life. The believer need not fear because God’s promises are certain. In Christ believers may expect definitive redemption from oppression as well as eternal life.

For the rich there does proceed a warning: do not seek your salvation in power and riches but in the Gospel of the LORD and His Son. The rich indeed has it good on earth and therefore is praised by people, but if he does not know the true treasure; he perishes and must leave everything behind. Therefore see in your life on earth what a glory God prepares for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:9).

What does redeeming mean (vs.16)?
