READ: Col. 3:1–4: “… When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
Through faith in Christ, you become one with Him. With Him we ourselves have, as it were, died and been buried (see 2:12). Rom. 6 says: “For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.” How could the unity between Christ and believers be described better? He died and was buried in our place and for our salvation. But that was not the end of our communion with Christ. No, thanks be to God—that unity and communion continue.
Thus, Paul says in Rom. 6: “certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.” We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that we should walk in newness of life, just as Christ was raised from the dead. Paul now draws his conclusion: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.”
The unity with Christ must now govern our whole life. Jesus desires to see from heaven that we also seek Him, that is, direct our attention toward Him and long for Him. How can our faith be living if we do not continually desire to know and understand Him and His will more fully? Is it not the same in a marriage between husband and wife?
Christ desires to give us everything that is necessary. Through the Father, He provides us with all good things. But He asks one thing: seek first the kingdom of God, seek first the things which are above, and all things will be given to you on earth as well (cf. Matt. 6:33).
Therefore, direct yourself to the things that Christ teaches us, demonstrated before us, and requires of us in the service of His kingdom.
At the same time, let us abandon and put away matters that stand apart from Christ. Not only ungodly matters, but also useless matters that seek to demand our attention. Let us rather live in expectation of the return of Christ and the glory that has been promised and laid up for us. That life is now hidden with Christ in God in heaven, to be revealed at His return (Rom. 8:21).
Can you explain what we underwent with Christ?
