READ: Col. 3:16,17: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly … whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus …
All Paul’s exhortations to the congregation in Colossae, and also to us, concern how we are to deal with one another in the church. These warnings proceed from what Christ sets before us and has demonstrated in His own life. These are not Paul’s own ideas for preserving peace, but divine words that seek to take possession of our lives.
For that, an open and longing attitude toward the Word of God is necessary. How can that Word work and continue to work in our lives if we give it so little attention? There lies a great responsibility upon the hearers with regard to God’s Word. Paul exhorts them to let that Word dwell richly in them. Dwelling is more than hearing it and occasionally reflecting upon it. Dwelling means having a permanent place.
To dwell richly means that large portions of the gospel are received, pondered, and remembered as the Word that gives life. Growing in faith also means that God’s Word fills your entire life. This begins with knowing the love of God in Christ (cf. Eph. 3:17–19).
With that wisdom you will also increasingly devote yourself to showing responsive love toward God and your neighbor, especially your brother and sister. This will also become evident in the way you watch over one another, teach , and admonish one another (v. 16), seeking one another and caring for one another.
No one may be left behind through indifference, nor may any bitter root of false doctrine or discord spring up (Heb. 12:15). Can you always prevent this? No, but we do have this important task.
Living together, dwelling together, and sharing together in the communion of saints involves not only joyful events, but also difficulties because of sin. Christ has also given us to one another so that together we may hold fast to Him and continue to follow Him wherever He goes—taking refuge in His blood and praying for His Spirit. Yet at the same time, above all, doing so with gratitude, thanksgiving, and praise to God.
Everything must be in the name of the Lord Jesus: before His face, in accordance with His Word, and in communion with Him.
Why and how do you instruct others in the church?
