JULY 29, 2026 – GAIUS

READ: 3 John 1–4: … I rejoiced greatly … just as you walk in the truth …

The third letter of John has the same tone as the second. Once again it concerns truth in love. John again calls himself “the elder.” Whereas the second letter ends with an urgent call not to welcome false teachers into one’s home, this letter emphasizes that brothers from elsewhere should indeed be hospitably received.

The letter is addressed to a certain Gaius, a well-known and “beloved” friend of John. He is a member of a congregation in Asia Minor and is well regarded. John wishes him well. Other brothers from the congregation bear a good testimony concerning him, especially regarding the way in which he deals with the gospel.

He is an example to others, not merely in knowledge of the truth or in defending it against false doctrine, but especially in walking in the truth. His conduct is in agreement with God’s Word. In his life he shows that God’s Word of truth is at work within him and that the Spirit of truth leads him. He demonstrates a heartfelt life of faith in which faith works through love.

That John also prays for his health (v.2) is likely for the continuation of the good work he has begun in the congregation.

The beautiful testimony concerning Gaius fills John with great joy (v. 3). John is not so much concerned with the person of Gaius alone; this applies to all who show such faith. Verse 4 says: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” John rejoices that his preaching and labor bear fruit in “his children.”

His joy also includes amazement. He recognizes that the Lord works in the hearts of His children through His Word and Spirit.

John’s description of this joy also indicates how Christ as the Head of the church, judges this development. There is joy in heaven when believers, His children, show in doctrine and life that He is their Savior and Redeemer, dwelling and working in them.
