READ: Ps. 93:1-5: … Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting … mightier than the noise of mighty waters … holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, forever.
As the people and church of the Lord, we must continue to see Him in His omnipotence. He stands above all earthly rulers; He governs all creation: the earth and the heavens and their history. This Psalm reminds us of this with the exclamation: “The LORD reigns!” He alone is King! This is not something new; it is “from of old.” There is no doubt about it: “Your throne is established.” His power proceeds from Himself; there is no one who can give it to Him, let alone take it away: “He has girded Himself with strength.” In this way, the LORD sustains His creation: “the world is established, so that it cannot be moved.”
Let us therefore also stand in awe of Him! For He is “clothed with majesty:” He continually deserves our worship.
The fact that He, the almighty and faithful God, is King and has everything in His hand gives rest and peace to His people, and therefore also joy, for as King He will protect and save His people. This is the gospel here. We also read this joyful proclamation in Isa. 52:7: “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace … who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”
In this short Psalm, glorious attributes of God are indicated: His majesty, His omnipotence, His unchangeability, and His eternity. What encouragement and comfort this gives us in a world where earthly kings and rulers think they can rise up against God and His Kingdom. We read about this in verses 3 and 4.
Heathen nations rise up against Him. Here, just as in Ps. 46:4,7 and Ps. 89:10,11, this is portrayed as dangerous surging waves that can wash away entire stretches of land. This does not refer to cruel wars, but rather to the persecution of the church. But the outcome will show that God is the Victor. Therefore, the church is safe with Him when she honours and obeys Him by holding fast to His Word and living according to His law in holiness (v.5; cf. 1 Pet. 1:16).
Why can the church be called holy?
